Cattle are one of the only resources that the Beefy Nessuns will trade for. Large purchases are made by their leaders in exchange for various captured resources or even hostages. The purchased cattle are rounded up in the middle of the fleet, and a processing line is made. A warrior is selected to perform the ritual of “Beef Praise”. The warrior must then approach the largest/most dangerous specimen and give a lengthy oration on the struggles of the early Nessuns— their sacrifices and the strength of their spirit. Special attention is given to food-insecurity, starvation, and the overall feebleness experienced by their ascendants. The speech ends with explicit praise for those who survived the Hungry Years so that their followers would “eat beef”. At this point, the warrior uses a small knife to aggressively stab the neck of the steer while wresting it into submission. The goal is to prolong the animal’s death, maximize the spreading of blood, and the eventually sever the head completely. After being removed, the head is raised as a trophy and passed around the crowd as the other cattle are butchered. The gathered Nessuns will cover themselves in beef-blood and avoid washing it off until they have paid their own respects to the ancestors by killing something.
