The single largest organism ever recorded. The Barrier-Pattern, or just “Barrier” is a continuous Membrance pattern that forms a layer over roughly half of Earth’s atmosphere. Thought to be so complex that it contains a god-like consciousness(or several). 

The second most studied of all the known patterns of Membrance (Taking samples from Vronans is far less complex). The Barrier is visible across the night sky all over the world. It takes the shape of a luminous green fabric that is constantly undulating. Although beautiful, the Barrier blocks out all visibility of the stars and other celestial bodies— it has made all forms of astral-navigation impossible for over a decade. 

Originally, the Barrier was an enormous mass of Membrance drifting towards Earth. Even with limited imagery and data, there appears to have been little to no changes in the mass’s organization, or other discernible features, before colliding with the atmosphere. However after the impact-event, or “Verdant Night”, the mass distributed itself across the dark side of Earth, and has been constantly adjusting its position to stay there ever since. 

Apart from its physical implications, the Barrier is directly linked to a variety of phenomenon involving both humans and other patterns of Membrance:

• The Barrier will “eject” chunks of itself into the ocean, or specific locations. These meteorites, or “Strikes” normally occur within conjunction to high activity by Vronans, Verdant Cultists, or even individual Shattered. Although the material typically liquifies on impact, it is “inert” and unresponsive to any Membrance-related activity. 
• The Barrier is the only known source of the “Fallen Vronans” A unique variant of Strike where a single, Vronan is formed out of the meteorite’s pool. These Vronans possess exponentially higher “densities” than what is typical for their kind.
• The Barrier is responsible for the “Shattered” population— individuals who have developed abnormal psychological traits, or multiple consciousnesses after looking directly at the Barrier for prolonged periods of time. Shattered typically regard the Barrier as a sentient entity, and there have been recorded cases of individuals claiming to receive communication from it. 
• The Barrier is the sole deity in the Cult of Verdance. Data is extremely limited, but they perceive it as a divine arbitrator. 

These apparent “relationships” have raised questions about the Barrier’s nature as a pattern. Is it a combination of multiple patterns coexisting in a single mass? Are the V-ronin, Verdant, and Shattered patterns “descended” from the Barrier? Is the Barrier a pattern that is so advanced that it can actively manage others? There is also the question of the Barrier’s sentience, and its agenda.
