The Strets

A region occupying the river systems and conurbations of America’s East. The most consistently insane part of the country.

The heavy urbanization and massive population of the East Coast produced the most intense fighting and most violent collapses of the Burnout. Surviving marauders either took over entire cities, or fled into the Midwest. Ordinary civilians were forced to subsist on the fringes of urban centers or try their luck in the decimated suburbs.

Instead of The Widow’s Passage, which exposed factions in the Passage Lands to the Agribine engine and Callers, the Strets fell under the influence of F5. F5, a particularly well-managed cult, was founded by survivors in Boston who sought a permanent state of peaceful anarchy and an absurdist embrace of the Burnout. This had varying affects on surviving communities:

  • Mass-suicide as an alternative to fighting over resources
  • Obsession with maintaining/refurbishing Pre-Burnout buildings and infrastructure
  • Fetishizing knowledge of Pre-Burnout culture and history
  • Artistic recreations and depictions of Burnout-era violence

By the mid-30’s, the area under F5’s control had extended to the major cities of the East Coast (above the Verdant Delta) and along the area’s major rivers. The term “Strets” became derived from both the “stretched” riverbanks during the Burnout-Era’s floods and the elastic and demented nature of people’s minds in the Post-Burnout.

Factions within the Passage-Lands developed trade relations with groups in the Strets. However, the real value was the cultural exchange. Artisans and technicians from the Strets were highly useful for developing Clans. As time progressed, several leaders realized the area’s potential as an intellectual hub, and sent their apprentices there to be educated.

When the Formers sect in Manhattan revealed itself, the Order quickly dispersed through the region and further accelerated restoration projects. Because of this superior infrastructure, the Strets are frequently used by Clans and the Guild for their R&D and the training of their senior officers. All of this occurs with a firm understanding that the Strets are to be kept out of whatever political struggles occur in the Passage Lands or elsewhere.
