Biosphere Reversion

An extremely old detachment of Formers, the Office of Rewilding is a mostly defunct group that intended to safeguard the planet’s natural resources in the event of an incomplete Burnout.

The Office of Rewilding was proposed by Johann Kar, an early associate of Chessman, in the late 20’s. Kar was a firm believer that the best way forward with humanity was to generate a civil collapse so severe that an overwhelming majority of the population died. However, he expressed concerns over the fate of the natural world, should the Order’s plans fall short. Kar’s solution was a splinter-cell from the main order: the Office of Rewilding. While cells from Formers would avoid interaction with other survivors, members of the Office would embed themselves with communities and direct them towards more ecologically sustainable practices. Kar envisioned his agents leading other survivors against semi-crippled governments who were still pumping crude oil or endangering water-supplies. Unlike the rest of the Order, the Office of Rewilding established no methods for its operators to communicate. When the Burnout hit, and utterly destroyed every organized government in the world, there were 34 members of the Office scattered throughout America. Most of them died in the Locust Era. Those who survived may have either worked directly on, or heavily influenced the following projects:

  • The destruction of most highways in the country. This was also one of the easiest ways that surviving communities could defend against marauders during the Locust-Era.
  • Putting most forestry and game-related responsibilities in indigenous communities. Indigenous communities might have broached this arrangement to other survivors as a way to safeguard their autonomy. In exchange for respecting the land and customs of indigenous survivors, groups would typically receive a limited supply of game and other natural resources.
  • The development of non-hydrocarbon engines for several major Clans. These Clans might have realized early on that it would be more viable to invest in developing new engines instead of having to compete with other groups for hydrocarbon fuel.
  • No crude oil industry. Groups may have naturally avoided pumping crude oil as it required significant amounts of infrastructure to be kept around fixed deposits. Furthermore, most of this infrastructure was either in the Strets or Swells.
  • Pastoral grazing for most livestock. This option allowed greater adaptability for ranchers, as well as the ability to walk their products to potential buyers.
  • Crop-rotations for most farming operations. This may have arisen naturally due to early Clans agreeing to rotate which sub-group had to have their farming operation border potentially dangerous neighbors.

Regardless, the overall “sustainability” of America’s industry doesn’t make much of a difference with how small it is. Formers was extremely interested in re-contacting members of the Office. The Order assumed that Kar’s associates would have the sense to work closely with Callers. It was possible that some of them might even have connections in the Verdant Delta, an area famously hostile towards Formers. In the late 40’s and early 50’s, Formers was able to contact a precious handful of surviving members of the Office and at least one made a report on their experiences from within the Delta.
