““Unpatterned” Membrance is a hypothetical state for Membrance that has not been exposed to the electronic or neural waves of humans.
The term is dated, as it was made before radiation-feeding patterns, that subsist entirely without human-related waves, were discovered.
Conjecture suggests that there was a point where the “Main-body” was beyond the range of any deep-space probes and their emissions. Thus, it would have subsisted entirely off of various kinds of solar radiation, hence the nickname “Cosmic-Grade”.
Unpatterned Membrance is used as a “branching-point” for discussions on how the lifeform evolved in the first place. There are a handful of theories:
- The lifeform developed in space. A random combination of gasses and other materials from debris formed a sort of “Interplanetary Primordial Soup” that produced Membrance.
- The lifeform mutated from a planetary organism that was launched into space. An existing lifeform was exposed to space, either by the direct action of another intelligent species, or through other means (Atmospheric failure, massive collision) and evolved into Membrance from there.
- The lifeform evolved on a planet and naturally became spacefaring. Membrance evolved on an alien planet and then proliferated in space through natural processes.
Another important theory that stems from Unpatterned Membrance is how it behaves with celestial bodies that do not have intelligent life. Although there is little research on communication between different patterns of Membrance, it is assumed that the Barrier-Pattern acts as a sort of “alpha” amongst the other patterns due to its sheer size and complexity. Research on some “lesser” patterns, namely those that feed off of Earth’s magnetic field, has revealed that these patterns are “stagnant” or without a growth-rate. They only tap into a decimal-percent of their available food-supply. The theory is that the Barrier-Pattern is responsible for this puzzling behaviour.
Perhaps the Barrier-Pattern is intelligent enough to actively preserve its “host-planet” by restricting other patterns that might endanger it (like a pattern that would consume Earth’s magnetic field if left unchecked). Without a governing Barrier-Pattern, the arrival of Membrance could be a death-sentence for other planets. An alternative theory is that all patterns of Membrance might have an instinct to preserve their food-source through restrictive growth-rates and intentional die-offs.
